The Piermont Historical Society Presents Lecture on Geology of Piermont

Piermont: On January 14th, 2009, Piermont residents and visitors with an interest in earth science and local history with have an unusual opportunity to learn about the village from the bottom up, so to speak. Longtime Piermont resident and Professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences Mark H. Anders, Ph.D. will present The Role of Geology in the Historical Development of Piermont in a program sponsored by the Piermont Historical Society.

A longtime Piermont resident, Anders has been at Columbia University for more than 20 years, where he is a tenured professor associated with Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in Palisades, as well as with the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley, his M.S. from the University of Michigan, and his B.A. at the University of Colorado. Anders’ research includes work on supervolcanoes, massive catastrophic landslides, and the processes involved in extending the Earth's crust. Prior to joining the faculty at Columbia University, Anders served as a Research Assistant and a Teaching Assistant in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at the University of California at Berkeley, as a Research Geologist in the Seismotectonics Section at the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation’s Engineering and Research Center, and as a Research Geologist in the Rock Mechanics Branch at the U.S. Bureau of Mines Research Center. Anders was also the Associate Editor of the Geological Society of America Bulletin from 1998 until 2001, and was a member of the Editorial Board at Geology from 1993 through 1998. A 1996 Fulbright Senior Scholar, Anders also served in with a Marine Corps infantry unit in Vietnam, for which he was awarded New York’s Conspicuous Service Star. He has been a member of the Piermont Planning Board since 2003.

The Role of Geology in the Historical Development of Piermont, a presentation by Mark H. Anders, will take place on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. in Piermont Village Hall at 478 Piermont Avenue. The suggested donation is $5.00. The Piermont Historical Society, a 503(c) non-profit corporation, is presently raising funds in order to complete the interior restoration of the historic Piermont Train Station.
