Art in Garnerville

About a half hour drive north, a community of artists has found a home at the Garnerville Arts and Industrial Center located on Minisceongo Creek near Haverstraw. Originally a pre-Civil War textile mill, 18 years ago one third of its space was divided into small studios for artists. About 50 artists and artisans including sculptors, painters, wood workers, mosaic and stained glass artisans and musicians now occupy part of the large 341,000 square foot complex, which also encompasses performance and exhibition areas.

Pedestrians Unite!

Since June, when the yellow blinking light at the intersection of Oak Tree and Closter Roads was swiped by a truck and had to be removed, simply crossing the street has become an even more treacherous undertaking for some Palisadians.

Harvest Moon Benefit

The Harvest Moon Happening was held at Lamont Doherty on September 29th to benefit Nyack Hospital and the event was a resounding success. As the first major community fund-raising event to be held in Palisades in years, the benefit inspired scores of local residents along with hundreds of other guests from around Rockland County to show how much they care about supporting our local hospital. It seems that the invitations were so alluring that few who received them were able to resist; having torn open their envelopes, everyone immediately realized that they had to go out dancing under the full September moon.

Palisades Community Center - October 2007

The last event before the summer hiatus was the Community Center’s Family BBQ Fund-raiser which was a great Palisades family affair. Those attending participated in many activities such as learning how to square dance, a whip cream pie eating contest, a real pie contest for both adults and kids, as well as tug-of-war and water balloon activities, to name just a few. The rain was a bit cumbersome but did not dampen the spirit of those witnessing the unveiling of the Palisades Community Center sign so generously donated by fellow Palisadian, Henry Ottley.

November 9, 10, 16 & 17 at 8:00 pm

November 11 at 4:00 pm at the Palisades Presbyterian Church

Why see it at Lincoln Center when you can see it with us for a mere $10?! It’s a tale of love and betrayal; of duty and war and intrigue—stolen children, a princess in disguise, an evil stepmother; a ridiculous villain who gets his head chopped off and all in the fantastical setting of Middle Earth! After all, why wear togas when hobbit feet are so much more fun?

WHERE THE BOYS ARE: A Story from W340

It is back to school time and children all over Palisades will be boarding buses headed for school. Children do not wait at the corner for the school bus in our neighborhood. The reason? The corner of Muroney and Route 340 is just too dangerous. Cars on their way to the Volvo facility or Takasago or other companies in the Rockleigh Industrial Park roar past. They speed by our little corner year round often at forty miles an hour. Add to the mix trucks and vans pulling trailers full of landscaping gear and you have a dangerous combination. It is just not safe for children to wait so close to this road and the younger ones can never wait there without supervision. So parents and children wait about twenty feet down from Muroney.

DAPPER DOG TO THE RESCUE

I first heard of Dapper Dog, a pet supply and professional grooming shop in Nyack, shortly after the Katrina disaster when I read that it was bringing in a number of homeless pets rescued after the storm. I encountered the name again recently and learned about Gerry Tartaglione, the feisty, passionate woman who owns the shop, when I saw a notice in our library about a cat that needed a home.

New R/V Langseth named after Marcus Gerhardt Langseth, (1932-1997)

Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory’s first ship was the R/V Vema, acquired in 1952. She was succeeded by the Robert D. Conrad, the Eltanin, and the Maurice Ewing. But today’s requirements for a seismic research vessel are greater than ever before. Several years ago the search began for a new vessel that could meet the new demands. Western Legend, a commercial seismic exploration vessel owned by Western Geco, Inc., turned out to be the ideal candidate.

May 2007 -- Palisades School Sale Update

The South Orangetown Central School District is looking for ways to offset the cost of upcoming critical facilities improvements to the schools. On March 21, at the SOCSD Board of Education meeting, the crowd in the packed TZHS cafeteria listened to the long-awaited appraisals of the four properties and the preliminary 2007-08 budget presentation.
