Bulletin Board: December 2014

Joined by Orangetown Supervisor Andy Stewart, State Senator David Carlucci, and other dignitaries, Palisades resident Carol Baxter cuts the ribbon on the new Oak Tree Road sidewalk project at a ceremony held Sunday, October 26th at noon in front of the Palisades Community Center. The project, which began planning over six years ago, allows residents of Palisades to walk safely along busy Oak Tree Road and connects key community landmarks such as the post office, library, bus stop and community center. The approximately $235,000 project was funded in large part by $150,000 in state funds delivered by Senator Carlucci.

Anybody home?

Fall and winter are popular seasons for burglaries because it gets dark early. Driving around the neighborhood at 5:00pm, most homes are dark, a sure sign that no one is home. South Orangetown police recommend that you put your inside lights on a timer beginning around 4:00pm. That way your home looks occupied until you come home.

Writer-in-Residency

This past August, Jackie Vorenkamp was appointed Writer-in-Residence at the Butterfly House in LaGrange, Georgia, sponsored by Wes and Missy Cochran of the Cochran Gallery, also of LaGrange. She is the first writer ever to be invited. She spent the month off the grid working on her novel, kept company by Floyd the rooster, Monkey the cat, deaf Lucky Chaz the dog, and three-legged Lizzie, also a dog. Wes and Missy’s friend and colleague, Tommy, for whom the backwoods are sacred, took her on a mud ride to the old Creek Indian encampment where under the Georgia night sky quartz arrowheads littered the ground like fallen stars.

Pottery by Kathy Sykes

On December 7, I am participating in a show at Greenwich House Pottery in Manhattan where I have studied for the past ten years. The weekend just after Thanksgiving and the following Saturday, I will be opening my Palisades studio for a specially priced presale of my pottery. My work is wheel thrown, functional - bowls, vases, mugs etc - many in porcelain.

I invite you to stop in at 100 Washington Spring Road from noon to 3:30 on Saturday, November 29, Sunday, November 30 or Saturday, December 6. Take the path just to the left of the house. My studio is on the left at the back of the yard.

Corrections

In the previous issue of 10964 the Palisades Cemetery was mistakenly referred to as the Snedens Landing Cemetery (which does not exist!) Also, the following writers were not credited for their stories: Lisa Rinehart (LG and the Palisades), Sabelle Frasca (Bright Horizons Preschool), Tom Mazziotti (Il Divo). And Sally Savage was not credited for her picture of Dorothy Davis. Apologies from the editor.
