Bulletin Board - December 2015

Elections: Two years ago, Orangetown Supervisor Andy Stewart was re-elected by only two votes; this time he defeated his opponent by 1200 votes. There were two contested seats on the Orangetown Town Board. One was won by Democrat Gerry Bottari and the other by Republican Paul Valentine. Eileen Larkin, who worked at the polls that day, tells us that only 25% of the registered voters came to vote. Elections matter; let’s do better next time.

Thomas Mazziotti, Palisades resident and film director (“Charlie Hoboken”) will be hosting a new after hours series called “Little Known Films” at the Palisades Free Library. Read the film review first in Tom’s column of the same name in 10964, then come with your friends and neighbors to see the film. This issue’s title, Gemma Bovery, will be shown free of charge on December 5th at 5:00 pm in the Marie Firestone Community Room on the library’s third floor. Light appetizers and discussion to follow.

The Children's Shakespeare Theater We are excited to embark on our 17th season — the season of Surprises! We kicked off the season with Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead in November, and you’ll want to save January 9th for our all-day Winter One-Act Festival in Nyack at the Nyack Center.

Next June we will be taking ten kids between the ages of ten and fourteen to Stratford Ontario to attend the World Festival of Children’s Theatre, where they will be housed with local school children and will perform in the local schools as well as twice on the Stratford Festival stages. We are very proud that CST, the only company from the USA, has been asked to attend this event.

Nan Michelmore has had two watercolor paintings accepted for a show at the Art Gallery at the Rockefeller State Preserve in Pleasantville, New York. The show opened on November 8 and runs until January 3d.

Barbara Meyer: First there was Carson and Crystal then Lewis and now Meyer. Congratulations to Palisades resident Barbara Meyer for being inducted as a new member into the prestigious New York Friars Club.

Roger Weisberg's powerful new documentary Dream On was shown at the Palisades Community Center on November 15. It is described as “an epic road trip in search of the American dream” and will be shown on public television next year, before the election.

The Palis-Agers will meet in the Community Room of the Palisades Presbyterian Church on Wednesday December 16th at 1:45 pm. We were informed last month about a new program to help Palisades seniors, created as an honor project by four Tappan Zee High School seniors, one of whom, Livy Bartels, lives in Palisades. If you are interested in hearing about this project, which is called “Help an Elder,” please come to the meeting.

Milbry Polk was recently awarded the prestigious Captain Joseph-ElzEar Bernier Medal from the Royal Canadian Geographical Society for the work she has done promoting exploration, especially for women, and the work she has done in the Arctic.

Walgreen's: Demolition for the new Walgreens at the corner of Oak tree Road and Route 303 in Tappan has begun. All the Town approvals have been granted but we do not know when Walgreen’s will open. The project is currently on hold until a performance bond is posted by the builder. A performance bond is a bond issued by a bank or other financial institution guaranteeing a contract will be fulfilled.

Fellow neighbors with dogs: Please make sure your dogs are tagged with your contact information. Too often lost dogs are taken in by community members, who diligently try to reunite the dogs with their owners without any clues to who owns the dog. Please make it a point to have your dogs collared and tagged.
