Letter to the Editor - March 2008
I am writing in response to your article, “Aging in Place,” which appeared in the last issue of 10964.
The article seemed to infer that anything other than staying at home, as we age, was not an option of choice. I work at the Esplanade at Palisades, a senior residence that has become the second home to an aging population. Some of them are living with their spouses and some are living alone, and all are aging-in-place in dignity in a warm and caring home-like environment.
Being an active member of the Geriatric Mental Health Workgroup of Rockland County, and a supporting member of the Geriatric Mental Health Conference held yearly in Suffern, New York, I am involved, and support, any investigation into how best to enhance the services Rockland County can offer its senior citizens. In addition, the Esplanade at Palisades participates in the Office of Aging respite program.
The Esplanade at Palisades has never suggested that we offer a better lifestyle than when someone can safely, and with dignity, maintain his or her own home. It is our belief, however, that when the time comes that someone is confined to their home due to lack of support, or socialization, an alternative should be available. That alternative can be very enriching and rewarding.
We offer our knowledge, and the voices of our residents through their experiences, to help you gather the information needed to move ahead with your plans. We support your quest to move the county forward in supporting its elderly population. We also do not want you to be fearful of the other alternatives available.
