New Baby
Freya and Kazuo Sakamoto announce the arrival
of their son Kai Englander Sakamoto born on
November 15, weighing 6 lbs 4 oz. Freya is the
daughter of David and Judy Englander.
Frank S. Umbrino of Palisades, NY died peacefully February 6, 2011 at home surrounded by his loving family. Frank was born in the Bronx on January 26, 1947 and lived in Rockland County for over 30 years. Frank is survived by his loving wife Margaret (nee Monahan), his sons Vincent and Philip, and his daughter Elizabeth.
New Burglaries
There have been a recent rash of jewelry thefts in
Blauvelt and Orangeburg. Front and back doors have
been kicked in, bedrooms have been ransacked and
jewelry stolen. Police feel this group is well organized
and know what they are doing. They target
homes where it appears no one is home. Police are
working with Bergen police since similar burglary
rings have operated in Bergen County.
Recommendations:
-Make sure your doors and windows are locked
-Set your alarm system
-If you go on vacation, tell your neighbors, cancel
your newspaper and have the post office hold your
mail. You can even register a vacation check with
the South Orangetown Police Dept.
Most important, if you know you will be gone at
dusk, have a timer set to turn on inside and outside
lights, especially in the winter months, when it is
dark at 4:00pm. A quick drive through our neighborhood
at 5:00pm shows most homes are dark. Keep
your lights on timers and you can throw in a timed
radio too! To report a suspicious activity in your
neighborhood, call 359-3700.
New Development
The Yuda house, built around 1860 on Route 340
near the corner of Oak Tree Rd, has changed hands
again. In an October meeting of the zoning board a
variance was granted to Comito Construction Company.
Comito is owned by two brothers who at one
time were the developers of the old driving range on
9W. The one-acre parcel has been divided into two
lots - the house, sadly, will be bulldozed and replaced
by two new homes. The closing took place on Nov.
30 and our long-time friend and neighbor, Pamela
Holmes, has returned to her hometown of Pittsburgh.
We’ll miss her. The changing of the face of
Palisades continues!
