In Memoriam — Katherine Briggs Rinehart
Katherine (Kay) was born in Caribou, Maine on March 21, 1930 and passed away peacefully on January 27, 2023. Educated at Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts, Kay married Virgil Rinehart of Chillicothe, Ohio in 1952. The couple shared a passion for travel, and Virgil’s career as a naval engineer with the Coast Guard took them to Europe, Japan, Hawaii and coastal cities of the US. Their son Gregory was born in 1955, followed by their daughter Lisa in 1959.
After settling in Rockville, Maryland, Kay discovered a love for teaching special needs children at Rock Terrace High School where she was beloved by her students for 30 years. After retirement, Kay and Virgil moved to Williamsburg, Virginia, where Kay continued to tutor students and volunteer as a docent at Williamsburg’smany historic homes and museums. After the death of her husband, Kay moved to the Esplanade in Palisades, New York, to be closer to her daughter. She was always game for road trips to local museums, galleries, restaurants, and summer visits to mid-coast Maine, but most of all she loved her children and her five grandchildren: Peter, Ian, Anna, Ariane and Sofia. We love her and will miss her every day.
