Palisades Free Library News: May 2015

RCLS Institutes Six Month Trial Governing Hold Requests
The Palisades Free Library is a member of the Ramapo Catskill Library System, which is a cooperative that allows libraries throughout Rockland, Orange, and Sullivan Counties to share books, audio-books, and DVDs through inter-library loans. Nearly all the libraries, including Palisades, restrict their newest books from inter-library loans. Beginning May 1, there will be a six month trial lifting restrictions on new books.

The intent of this trial is to see if opening more books to inter-library loan will result in hold queues processing more quickly, and to see if this benefit outweighs the concern about preserving certain collections for local browsing.

The result for Palisades patrons is that you will see fewer new books on the shelves at the Palisades Library because they will be out on loan to patrons of other libraries. However, other libraries’ books will be open to inter-loan and this trial will widen the selection of new books available to Palisades patrons.

We want to know how this experiment affects your library experience. You can fill out a form on line, in person, or speak to a staff member.

Welcome New Librarian Anya Berg
Anya Berg joined the Palisades Free Library in March as our Adult Services Librarian. Most recently, Anya worked at the library at the Lamont- Doherty Earth Observatory and the Valley Cottage Library. Anya will select books and DVDs for the adult collections, plan programs, and lead book discussions. If you have a reference question or need help with your laptop, tablet, or making a copy or sending a fax, Anya can help. Let her know what you like to read and what kinds of programs you are interested in.

Library Board of Trustees Honor Marie Firestone and Johanna Lo
At the end of 2014 both Marie Firestone and Johanna Lo retired from the Palisades Free Library. On April 8 the Board of Trustees expressed their gratitude for Marie’s and Johanna’s years of service to Palisades residents. In recognition of her 43 years of dedication and service, the Trustees dedicated the new program space as the Marie H. Firestone Community Room and mounted a plaque above the door in her honor.

Since the early 1970s Marie Firestone has been the warm and welcoming presence at the check-out desk to all who entered the library. Marie worked through enormous changes that affected the library including moving from the card catalog to computerization and ledger based bookkeeping to Quickbooks; not to mention two major renovations to the building which upended her workspace.

Johanna Lo served as a library trustee from 1975 to 1980. In 1995 she was hired as the adult services librarian. For almost 20 years Johanna ordered and organized books and multimedia and answered the community’s questions before and after the age of Google. Among her many duties, Johanna kept track of local history, kept abreast of changing technology and the latest trends in library service.

Although you won’t see Johanna and Marie behind the service desks, you might run into them as they are checking out their own books or DVDs.

We will again be offering our Summer Reading Program to all our young readers. “Every Hero Has a Story” is this year’s theme. Our weekly programs will incorporate the theme into fun activities: story time, craft programs, a book club and, of course, our reading folders and stickers all geared to encourage reading during the summer.

In keeping with this year’s theme, we will present the City Winds Trio on July 23, 7:30 pm. This program for adults and children features a performance of the music from Peter and the Wolf. Mark your calendar for this special event.
