SUNDAY SYMPOSIA

Our award winning series begins October 7th with It Needs Some Music: Composing for Stage and Screen. Composer David Shire, an Oscar and Grammy winner and multiple Tony and Emmy nominee, talks about and performs some of his music for stage musicals and movies, assisted by Broadway and off- Broadway singer/actress Lynne Wintersteller. On November 18th Academy Award winner Roger Weisberg previews his latest film, Critical Condition, which paints a disturbing and gripping portrait of what happens when you’re sick and uninsured in America. Postcard with details will follow.

CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS

Harvest Happening: Tuesday, October 23, 4:30 p.m.

Have some fall fun learning about fall, Halloween and Thanksgiving. Come in costume if you would like. For ages 2 to 4.

Halloween Haunting: Wednesday, October 24, 4:30 p.m.

Boo to you! Come in costume, listen to ghost stories and create a creepy craft. For ages 5 and up. Turkey Trot: Wednesday, November 14, 4:30 p.m. Gobble, Gobble, Gobble! Have some fun learning about our fine feathered friend. Make a turkey for your Thanksgiving table. For ages 5 and up.

Holiday Photo Fun for Teens: Thursday, December 6, 4:30 p.m.

Bring some family photos to design a photo book to give as a gift for someone special in your family. Make some holiday cards and tags, using holiday stamps and punches. For ages 8 and up.

Seasonal Story Time: Tuesday, December 11, 4:30 p.m.

Hear about the different winter holidays and create a decoration for your holiday house. For ages 2 to 4.

Gingerbread Gathering: Wednesday, December 12, 4:30 p.m.

Create your own gingerbread house. Bring a box of graham crackers. Fun to make and yummy to eat! For ages 5 and up.

STUDY BUDDIES

In September, we will resume our Study Buddies after school program. Elementary school students will be paired with local high school students, who offer guidance with homework and long-term assignments. High school students can earn community service credit as well as adding to future college resumes. Students and coaches can sign up for the program at the library’s front desk.

FALL IN THE CITY

Day trip into Manhattan with museum passes for the Guggenheim, the Cooper Hewitt, the Whitney and the Museum of Natural History. Family passes can be borrowed just like other materials. Free for the asking. Dates may be reserved.

LOG ON AND BE AMAZED

Palisades subscribes to a large number of databases funded by Palisades as well as other providers including the Ramapo Catskill Library System, New York State Library, Southeastern New York Library Resources Council, and Newburgh Library (our central library). The information available is phenomenal – from ancestry to world biography. Many of the databases have kid friendly versions, with an emphasis on complete articles from hundreds of magazines and encyclopedias for homework help. Want to learn a language? Rosetta Stone. Find great-great grandpa? Ancestry. Practice tests? Learning Express. New York Times headline 1929? Historical New York Times. Anything else? Palisades Free Library databases!

DOWNLOAD ELECTRONIC BOOKS & AUDIOS

This popular service allows downloading to your PC at home or office from anywhere in the world. And no late fees – ever. To access digital materials you will need: a valid library card, access to the Internet and free software for the computer and/or device available. At the Palisades Library web site access flashing “download ebooks” for more information and material available for books, music and videos.

LOCAL AUTHORS 2007 The library received a number of books published in 2007 from local authors: Joan Konner (The Atheist’s Bible), Chuck Barris (The Big Question), Donagh Bracken (The Words of War), Judith Umlas (The Power of Acknowledgement), and Alice Gerard (Palisades and Snedens Landing: The Twentieth Century). The library maintains a local author collection that has 223 items and is located near the reference collection.

TAPPAN ZEE THRIFT SHOP We still have a need for volunteers at the Tappan Zee Thrift Shop. Can you spare four hours a week or biweekly? This community service is guaranteed to prove interesting and irresistible. Once tried, forever hooked. Call the library for details.
