Palisades Free Library News, October 2011
In Memory of Charles Shimel
The trustees and staff of the Palisades Free Library
mourn the passing of our friend and colleague,
Charles Shimel. Charles joined the board in 2004 and
served as Vice-President and Treasurer. Charles made
many lasting contributions to the library including
maintenance and improvements to the building and
serving on the committee that developed the Palisades
People Sunday Symposia and the search committee
that hired our current director. We have created a
memorial fund to purchase an outdoor bench to honor
his work and dedication to the library. If you would
like to contribute to this fund, please send a check
made out to the Palisades Free Library with Charles
Shimel in the memo field.
Study Buddies Resume
The Study Buddies program pairs high school students
with younger students (grades 3 to 7) to help with
homework after school. Parents who are interested
in having a high school student help their child with
homework and/or short-term assignments should call
or come in to sign up for this program. We are looking
for high school students who can volunteer. One hour a
week is all it takes. Earn a community service credit and
gain some experience working with younger children.

Local Author Talk
Monday, October 17 at 7:00pm at the Library
Alexandra Richardson née Ratcliff, grew up in
Palisades and has lived much of her adult life in
Italy. She has worked in Bangkok for the United
States Information Agency, New York for Newsweek
Magazine and Milan for Selezione dal Reader’s
Digest. With her husband, she lives between London
and Tuscany. During her visit to Palisades she will
give a talk on her book, Passionate Patron: The Life
of Alexander Hardcastle and the Greek Temples of
Agrigento. Hardcastle was a self-taught enthusiast who
helped popularize the science of archaeology at the
dawn of the 20th Century. His greatest achievement
was the restoration of the eight columns at the Temple
of Hercules in Agrigento. We have two copies of her
book available at the library.
