Palisades Free Library News, October 2013
This fall the Palisades Free Library will complete an exciting renovation project that will expand and improve the services we can offer our residents. The last major building improvement was in 1996. The renovation will update the functional space and energy efficiency of the building while retaining the library’s warmth and historic charm.
What are the improvements?
By extending a portion of the building approximately
7 feet near the library entrance we made the
following improvements:
• Created an upstairs meeting room and program
space with seating for 25 people
• Installed a Hearing Loop in the meeting room for
those who use hearing aids
• Provided 2 more parking spaces
• Created a walkway connecting the Library
entrance to Oak Tree Road
• Provide bench seating near the entrance
• Added a rain garden to improve drainage around
the front of the building
How will the Library
pay for the renovation?
Monetary donations are always welcome at the Library,
but the renovation was paid for out of a Capital Building
fund that was created in 2006. We have been
awarded $146,000 in library building grant funds
through New York State and $15,000 in bullet aid
through Senator David Carlucci’s efforts. These grants
will offset a portion of eligible building expenses such
as the new meeting room space, new parking spaces,
walkway and improved staff workspace.
Why renovate now?
The Trustees of the Palisades Free Library determined
that now is the right time to renovate the
building to meet the needs of a
growing population. From the
2000 census to the 2010 census
the population of Palisades
increased nearly 15%.
We have the appropriate funds allocated, the price of labor and materials will increase in the future, and we need to seize the opportunity for New York State grant money.
Special Thanks: To the Building Committee for their time and commitment to the project: Helena Power, Jonathan Plowe and Lisette George and to Paul and Peter Papay of Papay Engineering and Construction for volunteering their services.
