Palisades Free Library Receives Award

In August, the Palisades Free Library’s “Sunday Symposia: A Community Cultural Series” was selected as the winner of the 2007 Member Library Adult Program of the Year Award from RCLS, the Ramapo Catskill Library System*. The award will be presented at the System’s Annual Meeting, Friday, October 5, at the West Point Club. The Library’s Board of Trustees President, Mary Ellen Ledwith, will make a brief presentation describing the program and provide a display highlighting the program for over 100 attendees who are library directors and trustees.

Mary Ellen writes—We are thrilled to have received this award and equally thrilled by the community’s interest which exceeded our expectations. The 2007 inaugural series was a tremendous group effort including members of the Library Staff, members of the Board and members of the community. As it evolved, it took on an added dimension involving our business neighbors Lamont-Doherty and The Esplanade who, when subscriptions exceeded our expectations, graciously offered their venues.

The series was designed to offer a glimpse into some of the lives that make up our hamlet and to foster dialogue on subjects ranging from the arts and journalism to medicine and the environment as they pertain both to Palisades and the world at large - and thus the headline (palisades people).

A sincere thank you to our inaugural series’ guests and program committee:

“A Life in Motion” - Mikhail Baryshnikov and Didi Conn

“The Mystery of Love” - Joan Konner and Al Perlmutter

“Doctors and Their Patients: Kudos and Complaints” - Doctors Ray Bernick, Sharon Quayle, Mel Rosenwasser and Jeffrey Sandhaus

“Our Planet’s Achilles Heel: Large Leaking Subglacial Lakes” - Dr. Robin E. Bell

“Do You See What I See” - Grace Knowlton and Joan Hooker

Program Committee: Kathryn Shattuck, Charles Shimel, and David Shire who was also our gracious master of ceremony.
