South Orangetown School Board Planning to Sell Our Brick Schoolhouse
Our community faces a new and serious threat. The South Orangetown School District has plans to sell the brick schoolhouse on Oak Tree Road and the property behind it, a total of 8.4 acres. They have already warned the co-op pre-school now occupying the building that they may be evicted in June and sent an appraiser to look over the property. This land abuts the 9W Golf properties now being developed by Lennar, and the two pieces of land could be connected with a road from 9W to Oak Tree Road.
A School Board Meeting taking place at 8 PM on Wednesday, December 6 in the South Orangetown Middle School Library. It is vitally important that Palisades residents express their opinions about this possible sale. If you can't come, put something in writing and give it to a friend who will attend the meeting.
In the early 1980s the School District considered selling the school but asked for feedback from people in Palisades. When they understood how unpopular the idea was, they decided not to sell. Please plan to attend the School Board Meeting and express your opinion about how this sale might affect our community.
To reach the South Orangetown Middle School, go north on Route 303 to Blauvelt, then turn left onto Erie Street and follow Erie Street until you reach the school.
