Architecture Walks
Architecture Walks: The Best Outings Near New York City, recently published by Rivergate Books, is by Lucy D. Rosenfeld and Palisades resident Marina Harrison. The duo, long time friends, has written eight additional books together including A Guide to Green New Jersey.
Their fascinating new book consists of nearly 100 sites within two hours’ drive from New York City. Divided by geography, areas include Connecticut, Lower Hudson Valley East, Mid Hudson Valley East, West of the Hudson, Long Island, New Jersey, and Delaware and Pennsylvania.
You’ll find a mélange of places - castles, college campuses, utopian communities, cemeteries, churches and temples, small historic villages, natural sites and even a Buddhist monastery - all just waiting for exploration. There’s the 187-acre West Laurel Hill cemetery in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania, that opened in 1869. Detailed instructions lead you through its beautifully landscaped grounds dotted with tombs containing 62 obelisks and two replicas of the Parthenon, mausoleums ornamented with stained glass and others right out of the Arabian Nights.
You’ll find a walking tour of historic New Castle, one of the oldest settlements in the Delaware Valley settled in 1651 by the Dutch West India Company, and a visit to Craftsman Farms, the Stickley Museum in Parsippany, N.J. Stickley was a leader in the American Arts and Crafts movement of the early twentieth century.
Each of the locations featured is carefully researched and, while the focus is on architecture, the book is rich in American history. This impressive collection of sites is a must for those looking for interesting short trips. Available at book stores and online, Architecture Walks retails for $19.95.
