The Composer, the Scientist and the Yoga Teacher: A Conversation with David Shire, Norbert Swisloski and Cynthia Fuller-Kling.

Cynthia (the yoga teacher): I received an email from you David in July saying you just turned 77, but feel like 65 because of the work we've done together. Why is that?

David Shire (the composer): The work has increased my flexibility, breathing, and posture. I had a family reunion and everybody said, “You look so great!” Iʼm more conscious - walking around and correcting myself with a general sense of well being. Aches and pains are much less. Iʼve had back problems since I was teenager…and sciatica. I had to walk with a cane for a couple of months, and now it has disappeared.

Norbert Swisloski (the scientist): I've been doing yoga for three and a half years. Still feel 78, but a better 78. Important result of yoga sessions is that my lower back pain is no longer a problem. I donʼt use a back support belt anymore at all. I only put it on when gardening and lifting, but most of the time I donʼt need it. I have had a back problem since I was 17 years old.

Cynthia: What made you decide to take a yoga class?

Norbert: David was talking about yoga and encouraged me to come.

David: My therapist said to me, “I think you need to do yoga. You are only living through the neck up. You never get into your body so I think a part of your problem is that you are so constricted.”

Cynthia: Iʼve witnessed such an incredible transformation in you both; what is the biggest change youʼve experienced?

Norbert: Reduction of back pain. It doesnʼt happen suddenly, it's gradual and you have to keep working at it.

David: Loss of back pain. I am working with more flow, feel less worry, and feel good about myself.

Cynthia: What would you say to someone who is afraid or intimidated, or thinks itʼs too late to start practicing yoga? Norbert: I think you ought to just try it. Give it a try. In an intimate setting like you have here, you can give each person some attention. I look forward to these sessions.

David: Itʼs never too late. You can understand downward facing dog if you have a dog! You have to say “Iʼm going to give it 3 months”. I canʼt think of a time when I walked out of here and didnʼt feel better.

Cynthia: Why do you show up each week?

Norbert: Because itʼs good for me.

David: I agree.
