Edwin Richardson 1932-2007
Edwin Richardson, a son of Emile and Dorothy (Pettress) Richardson, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on August 25, 1932. (He was one of twelve children.) From Pennsylvania, Ed went with his family to Newark and soon after moved to central Harlem. Ed graduated from Harran High School and the RCA Institute with a degree in Electronic Engineering.
Ed and Myra were married in April of 1960. Their children, Edwin (1961), Darryl (1963), and Stephen (1965) were born shortly after that. Edwin first worked for the Brooklyn Navy Yard. He installed ship electrical equipment to government standards. Because of rumors regarding the possible closing of the Navy Yard, Ed applied for a position at the National Weather Service (NOAA). He was hired a year later, in 1965.
In 1971, Ed moved with his family to Palisades, New York, and became an active member of the Palisades community, and was a member of the Hickory Hill/Palisades unique, cooperative car pool that took commuters to ‘The Rock’ at 30 Rockefeller Plaza and work places near by. Ed eventually rose to become the engineering manager for the tri-state area. Ed truly loved his 30 years of work for NOAA, and only retired, with great reluctance, when NOAA moved its headquarters to Brookhaven Long Island.
With retirement, Ed became more active in the Berea Nyack Seventh-Day Adventist church, eventually becoming head deacon. It was just before his retirement that Edwin was diagnosed with cancer of the colon. After a successful treatment, Ed went on with his life and activities in good, but slightly more fragile health. However, the initial treatments for colon cancer began to weaken Ed’s immune response. This would eventually lead to Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) to which Ed eventually succumbed early Thursday morning, November 29, 2007.
Ed is survived by his wife, Myra, and three sons: Edwin, Darryl (Tony) and Stephen. He is also remembered by sister-law Carmen Hodge and nine brothers and sisters: Dorothy Lewis, Norman Richardson, Harold Richardson, Ruth Richardson, Laverne Simon, and Reginald Richardson; Jacquelin Carroll, Gerald Richardson and Deborah Richardson; and many nieces and nephews, and countless friends.
