Gracing Us With A Retrospective

Informal Retrospective - Grace Knowlton 1975-2014 through Sunday March 8

Grace Knowlton has been a resident of Palisades for half a century and has been creating works of art from day one, up on the top of the hill in Snedens Landing. She works in a circular realm, literally from spherical sculptures alternating with white corners and intersected by lines. The spheres, which Grace creates through different materials from clay to concrete, were initially inspired by creating a magical safe space in which she might hide.

Dirt Piles? What on earth drew Grace to creating beautiful works of art with the subject matter being a pile of dirt? “How could one not be fascinated by dirt piles?” says Grace. Two of the paintings in the show Grace painted from standing behind the canvases where she could not see the surface she was painting on, and why? - because she wanted to give up control.

In the retrospective, Grace hopes a few portraits of sawhorses will bring your attention to the under-appreciated talents and beauty of the sawhorse. This period, characterized by angles and corners of mixed media, was inspired by her own house of many angles and corners designed by the architect Hugh Hardy.

Drawings of a twist of wicker from a chair again display her love of spherical shapes and circular lines, and will be included in the show. There is only a week or so left to see the show at Lesley Heller Workspace – it closes March 8 - but you can always go to the top of the hill to see more of Grace’s magic.
