The Technician Of The Transmission
The owner of Closter Transmissions has been in business for so long that he doesn’t remember at first when he started but he remembers why he started. “I was tired of seeing people getting robbed,” says Kevin Gacheny, “and the answer to your first question is 1990.” Kevin started working on dirt bikes and motorcycles when he was a kid in his parent’s garage before going onto vocational tech at a very early age.
“I can fix anything,” he says. His love of cars and how they work extends to his 1962 Red Buick Skylark convertible that he keeps under heavy wraps in the back. This is a true mechanic’s lair where a customer who enters is not met with a fancy waiting room and an espresso, if he’s met at all. Kevin is usually too busy working in the back with his trusted assistant Sasha, a twenty three year old expert mechanic and professional skate boarder who enters interstate races when he’s not fixing cars. Recently, he skateboarded from Brooklyn to San Diego in just under two months.
Kevin has that rare quality in a mechanic where he can give you very bad news without you minding too much. He will also fix things that he may not even tell you he fixed so you can be pleasantly surprised when you drive away.
This is not a shop that is on a main highway looking to do a fast oil change or a state inspection for some quick cash. It is a destination shop located on a back road in Closter where you go because you are looking to go there. They actually like what they do and take pride in doing it. They are located at 48 John Street. If you miss it, look for the skateboard propped up against the building next to the front door and you’ll know you’ve come to the right place.
