Palisades Cemetery

Today the future of the Palisades Cemetery is uncertain. The current owner of record does not participate in the property maintenance, financial or otherwise. In 1982, native Palisadian Helene Stansbury and others formed an ad hoc group called P.L.O.T. to clean up and maintain the neglected cemetery. The work has continued ever since.

Originally there were over 70 people who donated funds to cover yearly maintenance costs. That list of supporters is now less than 20. Minimum annual expenses are $2,000 or more. Bill Knudson, who has lived for 95 years on Closter Road, Jennifer Shapiro of Sparkill and myself, Lee Sneden, are the active remains of the group. We have been able to keep the property looking fine but I wonder about the future; will the Palisades Cemetery die? Lee Sneden (Lee can be reached at 368-0243 or leesneden@optonline.net)
