How Smart Are Smart Meters?

Smart phones, smart thermostats, smart door locks - it seems that anything today can start with the word smart if it performs its function remotely. This prefix certainly applies to the new “smart meters” O&R has begun installing in our area. These smart electric and gas meters give the the utility company the ability to switch off the power to our homes remotely and instantly. They are also able to provide the utility company with almost real time access to our power usage. This has caused concern about who has access to this data. For example, knowing the power consumption in your home can easily give someone access to information about whether you are home or not. Also, a controversial episode happened this past fall when victims of hurricane Harvey had their power cut off before the arrival of the hurricane in a pre-emptive move by the grid operator, causing anger and frustration with customers trying to evacuate.

A GENEROUS GIFT ADDS TO THE LONG PATH

I’m sure at one time or another you may have strolled or biked along the scenic, wooded path in Tallman Mountain State Park, but did you know that that path is part of a 358-mile long hiking trail known as the Long Path? Conceived in 1931 by Vincent J. Schaefer, the idea for the Long Path was to create an unmarked route connecting scenic and historic points of interest stretching from northern Manhattan to the Adirondacks. The opening stanza of Walt Whitman’s iconic poem “Song of the Open Road” inspired the path’s name.

LOCAL ROWERS SUPPORT ADAPTIVE SPORTS PROGRAM

For the past year Palisades resident GRETA NETTLETON, with the help of many dedicated volunteers, rowers and non-rowers alike, has headed Rockland Rowing Association’s Adaptive Rowing Program. A core group of athletes with physical disabilities including spinal cord injury, head injury, and amputation, has become deeply involved in the sport. Besides practicing on Rockland Lake twice a week, they traveled to a national adaptive regatta in Philadelphia, where they brought home two golds, two silvers and a bronze medal. They also traveled to a November scrimmage with RowNY in Queens. During the winter rowers work out indoors on rowing machines known as “ergs." The team won three gold medals at the Don Bosco Ironman Ergathon in January in Ramsey NJ.

Palisades Presbyterian Church Ramp Addition

This past summer, the Palisades Presbyterian Church received a generous donation from one of its members to be used for, among other things, a new covered entrance to the pastor’s office on the east side of the church along with a sidewalk leading to that office and a handicap access ramp off the front of the building. The donors chose architect William Pfaff, a member of the church, to design the project. After church members approved his design the plan was submitted to the Historic Board (HABR) and the ZBA in November.

ROCKLAND STATE HOSPITAL: A HISTORY

I’m with you in Rockland
where you scream in a straightjacket that you’re
losing the game of the actual pingpong
of the abyss

I’m with you in Rockland
where you bang on the catatonic piano the soul
is innocent and immortal it should never die
ungodly in an armed madhouse…

I’m with you in Rockland
in my dreams you walk dripping from a seajourney
on the highway across America in
tears to the door of my cottage in the Western
night

excerpts from Howl (for Carl Solomon) by Allen Ginsberg, 1956
