A Taste of the Grape

Joe Printz decided to learn all he could about wine when he opened his first restaurant in Washington D.C. in 1985. In 1994 he moved to Andre Hill in Tappan with wife Pam - the family now includes seven-year-old daughter Emma and dog Dijon - and in 2002, now fortified with a sound knowledge of wine, opened The Grape D'Vine at 99 Main Street in the heart of Tappan.

Printz's focus when founding his shop was on featuring interesting wines that sell for under $20. "I select wines for my shop by tasting them," Printz relates. He samples between 100 to 300 wines a week. "I look for both quality and value." When asked about current trends and new wines, Printz commented, "One of the hot grapes is malbec from the Mendoza region of Argentina. I think Portugal is due for a huge shot in the arm as well. They make great flavorful and totally undervalued wine. There has recently been an interest in pinot noir mainly because of the movie 'Sideways,' which has raised its price and produced lots of insipid wine."

The shop was designed with wine racks well below the ceiling to allow local art to be displayed. Once a month an opening is planned, providing artists with a venue and a way for new people to discover the store. Printz also does frequent wine tastings at the shop. A good day to sample is Friday he reports.

What are his plans for the future? "I would like to incorporate food into the wine mix and to join the Internet frenzy of online wine selling."

Joe has given us several wine suggestions you might like to try. The first, a red from Portugal called Vale du Torre, is a blend of three indigenous grapes that taste like stewed plums, cocoa and vanilla. It sells for $11.99. Another winner with hints of caramelized lemon and chervil is Pilandro Verdicchio. One of the best and cleanest sparklers is a cava from Spain called Cavas Hill. A great wine to start off your evening, it's bright and crisp with toast and minerals and sells for $10.99.
