Can We Talk?

The world just keeps on spinning. Global headlines are filled with stories of overseas tragedies—war in Ukraine, the devastating earthquake in Syria and Turkey, floods in Pakistan and wildfires in New Zealand, ongoing food shortages in parts of Africa and Asia. Domestically, we encounter continuing stories of violence from Memphis, TN to Monterey Park, CA, lingering effects of the Covid pandemic and the deepening homeless crisis accentuated by the disconnect between politicized budgets and the day-to-day reality of our citizens.

ECO-XMAS

Our modern notion of “Holiday Giving” can really be Hell on Mother Earth, as I’m sure many of you know. But there are many ways to reduce your holiday eco-footprint and still find great gifts! For loved ones of any age who feel burdened by material gestures of love, there are always bequests, or gifts to others: Heifer International is one well-known organization where you can, for instance, buy a villager a farm animal in someone’s name that will sustain a family for years to come. For smaller, more tangible gifts, of course buying local crafts or handmade confections is an option.

What to do About Takeout Food Containers

For those of us who take advantage of takeout food options in our area, but worry about the impact of the containers ending up in landfills, it can be daunting to know what to do. Even the co-owner of a local restau- rant complains that she knows some of their takeout containers are not recyclable, but she’s at a loss to find recyclable ones that are cost-effective and can hold the wet stuff. “It’s perplexing,” she says.

FORETELLING THE FUTURE

Eleven predictions for the year 2050 In answer to the question: What do you think the world will be like in 2050?

Valencia Massaro, 15, Sophmore at TZHS
The first thing that comes to mind is technological advancements. By 2050, technology will have grown to be even more entangled in our daily lives. I think it will be quite similar to how in the past year, more people have grown to value connecting with others as we are coming out of the COVID pandemic. In our hometown, I believe that Palisades will remain a tight-knit community, remaining constant in the ever-changing world of technology

The KIndness of Strangers

In February I was driving down to the Florida Keys for a month to get the cold out of my bones. I stopped in Beaufort, S.C., picked up my in-laws, Marianne and Steve Harrison, and headed south. We stopped overnight in Palm Beach. As we were heading out the next morning, I got a call from the Palisades Library.
