Can You Hear Me Now?
Pretty much ANYONE living or driving within the vicinity of the 9W/Oak Tree Road intersection has at some time experienced Palisades’ notorious cellular DEAD ZONE. From the 9W Market to the PIP exit #4, and Oak Tree Road from the Community Center to the Presbyterian Church, cell phone reception is either “terrible” or simply non-existent.

For those of us who take advantage of takeout food options in our area, but worry about the impact of the containers ending up in landfills, it can be daunting to know what to do. Even the co-owner of a local restau- rant complains that she knows some of their takeout containers are not recyclable, but she’s at a loss to find recyclable ones that are cost-effective and can hold the wet stuff. “It’s perplexing,” she says.

Eleven predictions for the year 2050 In answer to the question: What do you think the world will be like in 2050?
Valencia Massaro, 15, Sophmore at TZHS
The first thing that comes to mind is technological advancements. By 2050, technology will have grown to be even more entangled in our daily lives. However, I think at a certain point people will realize the lack of connection from the virtual world. I think that that will cause people to prioritize in-person conversations over virtual ones. I think it will be quite similar to how in the past year, more people have grown to value connecting with others as we are coming out of the COVID pandemic. In our hometown, I believe that Palisades will remain a tight-knit community, remaining constant in the ever-changing world of technology

The Carpentry Shop
There’s a simple sign at 238 Oak Tree Road alerting passersby to a carpentry shop. It is also a showroom with one-of-a-kind furniture and table craft as well as a gallery of majestic floor-to-ceiling slabs of wood. Recently, The Carpentry Shop held a grand opening celebration. For owners Julian and Natalie Dion, getting to this day has been a story of risks and putting one foot in front of the other.

In February I was driving down to the Florida Keys for a month to get the cold out of my bones. I stopped in Beaufort, S.C., picked up my in-laws, Marianne and Steve Harrison, and headed south. We stopped overnight in Palm Beach. As we were heading out the next morning, I got a call from the Palisades Library.

Unless you’ve been buried in a steel barrel at the bottom of Lake Mead, you have heard of pickleball. It’s become the sport of choice for a certain set. Mark Albert, Senior Recreation Leader with the Parks and Recreation Department of Orangetown, says that, in addition to pickleball, which is by far the largest and the fastest growing sport the town offers for adults, there are an abundant array of outdoor sports for children and adults all available at an extremely low cost.

Deer Proof Fencing
As a 30-plus year resident of Palisades, I’ve seen dramatic changes in the landscaping in our area. Where once elaborate, photogenic, and unfenced gardens flourished, many homeowners’ yards are now surrounded by high deer fences.

The term “peak oil” was coined in the 1950s by Marion King Hubbert, a geologist for Shell Oil. The theory represented a hypothetical bell curve in which our use of oil would decline when discovery of new reserves could not keep pace with our use of existing reserves. Oil after all is a finite resource. However, Hubbert's theory of peak oil has been proven wrong numerous times, even as recently as 2020. Today, however, and unfortunately for the environment, new oil exploration technology and extraction methods continue to increase proven reserves and have pushed a potential peak oil date far beyond our lifetime.
