In 1936, the YMCA started the Youth and Government (YAG) program in New York, the first of its kind in the nation. YAG is a model government which allows students to take on roles within the Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches, as well as a Press Corps. Palisades Community Meeting With Local and State Officials

On Sunday, March 26, over 80 residents pulled themselves away from a beautiful sunny day to attend a community meeting at the Palisades Community Center with Congressman Mike Lawler, State Senator Bill Weber, Assemblyman John McGowan, County Legislator Jim Foley and Town Supervisor Teresa Kenny. It was a rare opportunity for residents to voice concerns in person, and the amazing turn out showed that residents are alert and involved. Numerous topics were covered, but the top three were HNA, the Route 9W/Oak Tree Road intersection and abysmal cell phone service in the area.

Bi-Partisan Response to Radioactive Waste Threat

On April 5, Rockland County Executive Ed Day released a strongly worded statement protesting a planned August release of a million gallons of radioactive wastewater from the Indian Point nuclear power plant, directly into the Hudson River 15 miles upriver from our village of Palisades. According to Mr. Day’s press release, all five Hudson Valley County Executives are planning a joint press conference at the end of April, stating their collective opposition to the dumping by the Holtec corporation. The wastewater in question contains radioactive tritium and a long list of other toxic components, and has been used to cool spent nuclear fuel rods in storage pools. Fuel–rod removal is a separate issue.

Thank you!

Before I moved to Palisades I would stay at my parents’ house over the holidays and read the stack of old 10964 newsletters they kept in a guest room. I enjoyed the passion with which seemingly trivial topics were written. After moving here myself I took up the small note at the bottom of the newsletter encouraging residents to contribute. Within weeks I found myself spending a Tuesday night taking notes at a meeting about the Piermont marsh. And I loved it. I wanted to write about stuff that people would enjoy reading and things that interested me—Hudson River oysters, ice farming, local surface–to–air missile bases and interviews with our mailman. As time went on, the more people I met in town the more people told me they enjoyed what I wrote about and encouraged me to continue.

HNA Update

The Town’s pick, Kitching/Pelayo’s (REVEIL LLC) vision of a hotel/resort on the property that connects Route 9W with Route 340 in Palisades has been in “negotiations” for more than a year with HNA. Even after having invested $600,000 in deposit fees, they have been unable to close the deal with HNA. In July, an affiliate of SL Green, a Manhattan-based REIT (Real Estate Investment Trust), won a $185M arbitration award against HNA International Group due to a separate issue with an HNA property at 245 Park Avenue in NYC. This court filing has basically tied up all sales of HNA properties. The sale of any HNA property must be disclosed to SL Green and all sale proceeds are to be transferred directly to pay off the $185M debt.

Can We Talk?

The world just keeps on spinning. Global headlines are filled with stories of overseas tragedies—war in Ukraine, the devastating earthquake in Syria and Turkey, floods in Pakistan and wildfires in New Zealand, ongoing food shortages in parts of Africa and Asia. Domestically, we encounter continuing stories of violence from Memphis, TN to Monterey Park, CA, lingering effects of the Covid pandemic and the deepening homeless crisis accentuated by the disconnect between politicized budgets and the day-to-day reality of our citizens.
